KSTP Most Successful World Championships Ever!

A World Champion and Medals Galore!

The 36th FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships were held in Sofia, Bulgaria from 16th – 19th November 2022, the first World Championships Australian athletes have competed in since Tokyo 2019 due to Covid.

KSTP’s athletes Jack Hemmings, Ethan McGuinness, Koralee Catlett, and Breanah Cauchi competed in the Tumbling events, while Cheyanna Robinson competed in the DMT event, this is KSTP’s largest contingent to be part of the Senior Team.

KSTP’s athletes were the most impressive on the floor, picking up a Gold, Silver, Bronze, and another Gold as part of the DMT Team Event.  For the tumblers, they had to compete in a grueling and strategic three rounds, qualifiers, then top 16 semifinal, before the top 8 compete in the final, which then sees the top 4 move into the Super Final for a chance to win a medal.  Cheyanna’s competition in DMT saw her have the qualifier round to move straight into the top 8, then top 4 super final.

In between their individual events our athletes had the chance to be part of a Team Final and All-Round Final.  This is a thrilling event that brings the countries together as one to compete for the top spot.

For Ethan McGuinness, he was determined to make this year his greatest year, leaving nothing behind he dazzled the floor with the highest degree of difficulty performed by any athlete, which he has become known for.   In his individual competition he won Gold and became Australia’s first tumbler to own this crown, his display of pure elation was on show when he leapt in the air.  Ethan was also selected to represent men’s tumbling in the All-Around Team Final, where Australia narrowly missed the Bronze and placing fourth.

Koralee Catlett came away with the Silver Medal in her first Senior World Championships and was selected to represent women’s tumbling in the All-Around Team Final.  Breanah Cauchi had a strong competition but couldn’t quite nail the landing, finishing fourth in her first senior world championships.

Cheyanna Robinson came away from the event with two medals.  She was part of the winning DMT Team with fellow athletes Queensland’s Carina Hagarty and Braida Thomas and Western Australia’s Keara Nel, this is the first time since 1988 an Australian DMT team won Gold.  It was then time for her individual event where she won the bronze medal, her first medal as a Senior.

For Jack Hemmings, before competition commenced, he was selected by the Australian committee as one of the Team Captains and was also selected as Flag Bearer, which was an honor.  In his individual competition Jack finished as 2nd reserve the second qualifier and in the Tumbling Team final together with Ethan, Tasmania’s Jacob Smith and Queensland’s Thomas Clough they finished fourth.

For Dima and Rebecca Kachan, these results are the most successful of all time for the club and one that will go down in history.
